Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) and Design for Manufacturing (DMF)

Electronic Manufacturing Services or as known as EMS is a general term that usually used in some companies which design, test, manufacture and repair services for electronic components. It means that the companies give such kinds of manufacturing services, such as design, assembly, and testing for the customers. Electronic Manufacturing Services company could be contracted at various points in the process. There are some companies that require only a design file from the customer before developing the product. The rest of the companies that specialize in assembly sector may need and require the customers to provide their own design, the components which are needed for manufacturing and an assembled sample. Besides, EMS companies may also add those additional on-site services, for the example PCB (Printed Circuit Board) etching or may provide these services through another contractor. Electronic manufacturing has also different levels of automation; it depends on the companies and their project. Companies that produce a huge amount of products regularly use heavily automated manufacturing. Providers who specialize in smaller production or called as prototype runs assemble PCBs manually, usually to save the time and cost used in setting up automated assembly equipment.

Design for manufacturability or commonly known as Design for Manufacturing (DFM) is the art of designing product for general engineering in order to ease the way that they run the manufacturing services. DFM explains the process of designing or engineering product to facilitate the manufacturing process with a purpose to reduce or restrict the costs. The goal of DFM itself is to fix the potential problems in the design phase that is the least expensive place to address them. In the other words, the goal of DFM is to design product that is easily and economically manufactured. The important thing of designing for manufacturing is about the costs of a product, it’s approximately 70% of manufacturing costs product include materials, processing, and assembly. These costs determined by designing decision such as process planning or machine tool selection for only 20%. That’s why ACTIA offers maximum flexibility in every phase of maturity for products and manufacturing processes in order to reach the goal in electronic manufacturing services.
